What is inside

First Conversations is a free, original ten-page PDF from Bohdan Deutsch. It combines English guidance with short German examples. You can download it directly, without entering an email address, creating an account or providing a payment card.

The guide starts with an introduction, moves to a simple café exchange and finishes with ways to ask for repetition or clarification. Each dialogue is a constructed learning example. It is not a quotation from a student or a record of a real lesson.

How to use it

Start with one situation. Read the German and its English meaning, then try the prompts on the following page. The blank writing space is for your own name, preferences and phrases. You can print the workbook or use the prompts beside a notebook.

An answer key at the back lets you check the closed exercises. Personal answers will vary. Where the workbook asks you to write your own phrase, the example is one possibility rather than the only acceptable answer.

What it does and does not include

This is a small written introduction. There are no audio recordings, video lessons, personal corrections or certificates included. It is not a complete A1 course and it does not assess your language level. A PDF reader is the only required software; printing is optional.

Download the workbook, choose one dialogue and change a detail to make it your own. You can read it on screen or print a copy, then use the answer key to check the closed exercises.

Choose one phrase for today

You can work through the whole guide, but you can also start much smaller: select one useful phrase and adapt it to your own life. Say it, cover it, try it again and check. Stop while you still know what you want to revisit next time.

The workbook is licensed for personal learning use. Please do not resell it, redistribute the file as your own product or upload it to a public course library. Linking to its product page lets someone else find the current edition and read the terms.
